Our Wales is Creative (Mosaics)

In Beddau, people explored how nature is returning to a landscape once shaped by industry.

The former Cwm Colliery and Coke Works is now home to a surprising variety of wildlife. Working with Buglife Cymru, the group explored the old spoil tips and discovered butterflies, bees, beetles and even the ‘Beddau Beast’ – a tiny white millipede found in very few places in the world.

“My favourite thing was the trip to Cwm Colliery. I was excited when I caught a butterfly and sang ‘Let It Go’ as I watched it fly away.”

Inspired by what they discovered, the group worked with mosaic artist Justine Stroud to create colourful artworks celebrating themselves and their local environment. They also created a mural where flowers, butterflies and insects grow around the silhouette of the old coke works.

Together, the artworks show how a landscape shaped by industry can change, allowing nature, creativity and new stories to flourish.
