Deep Waters

Port Talbot’s landscape has long been shaped by both industry and the sea.

Inspired by Aberavon beach, the Knatty Knitters created these colourful sea creatures through knitting and crochet. Volunteers from Sandfields Food Pantry collected shells from the beach and painted the familiar steelworks skyline as a backdrop.

Together, the pieces bring Port Talbot’s industrial and natural heritage into the same landscape. Beneath the familiar skyline, marine life flourishes in bright colour, celebrating the wildlife of the coast and the creativity of the community.

When the artwork was first displayed, local people added their own memories of Aberavon beach – showing how the seafront continues to connect people, place and memory.
