Canals of Cardiff
The Glamorganshire Canal once carried coal, iron and limestone from the valleys to Cardiff docks. Today, much of it lies hidden beneath roads and the city centre.
People explored this lost history by walking the route of the old canal, comparing past and present photographs and discovering stories of Victorian Cardiff. They also visited Forest Farm, where a surviving stretch of canal is now a nature reserve rich with wildlife.
Inspired by what they discovered, the group created this collage using photographs, memories and artwork based on the traditional ‘roses and castles’ style of canal boats.
The collage captures Cardiff’s hidden history – and the beginning of a shared creative journey for people coming together through REACH.
